The Air Source Airway
The illustration below compares the standard SeaQuest BC airway (left) with the airway designed specifically for use with the Air Source (right). There are a number of differences.
- The standard airway has a channel for guiding the low-pressure inflator hose on the left side of the airway; on the Air Source model, this channel is on the right.
- The Air Source uses a special high-volume low-pressure inflator hose connector to ensure that a diver breathing from the Air Source gets enough air during what is usually a stressful situation.
- Of particular importance, there is a hard plastic section located halfway down the airway. This is connected to the Air Source and remote exhaust by stainless cables.
The purpose of the hard section is to give the donor something to grasp to activate the remote exhaust, even though the Air Source itself may be in his or her mouth. Thus, the Air Source airway gives users a means to control their rate of ascent without having to remove the Air Source from their mouths.
What’s important to understand is that no one should ever install an alternate-air-source inflator on a BC unless that BC has a means of venting air other than the normal power inflator mechanism.
