Perilous Plastic Cards
Most dive instructors teach from something called cue cards. These are slate-size plastic cards that list the skills the instructor must cover during each lesson.
Having training aids such as these helps ensure that skills are covered in a logical sequence, and that no essential skill is accidentally left out.
That’s the good news. The bad news is, a lot of instructors seem to feel that, so long as they cover all of the skills listed on their cue cards at least once during confined water training, they’ve done their jobs. Hello! Let’s get a freakin’ clue here…okay?
Having students perform a skill just once does not mean that they have learned it. Mastery of any skill requires repetition. Lots of it. Additionally, it’s important to understand that practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.
In other words, it’s not sufficient to have students practice skills only until they finally get it right. Once they get it right, it’s time to start practicing doing it right until only the right behavior is what students remember.
