Taking Personal “Baggage” Along

The previous example shows why, group leaders can’t afford to be taking along any mental baggage that will distract from the enjoyment of the group. Whatever else is going on in their lives — difficulties at work, strained relationships, etc. — they need to put it on “hold” for the duration of the trip.

No matter how carefully trip leaders plan, there are always things beyond their control — especially in foreign countries. Flights get cancelled, baggage gets lost and the weather is always unpredictable. There are going to be disappointments. What group leaders can’t afford is to let that disappointment show.

Pissed Off

As soon as group members see that their leader is unhappy, they will figure that they should be unhappy as well. But if the leader is perpetually upbeat — even when doing so seems to defy logic — group members may figure that something good must be just around the corner.

How about your own experience? Have you ever found yourself on a trip with the Instructor From Hell? Why not write and tell us about it? Your story may appear in an upcoming issue of StupidDiverTricks.com.
