The Dumbest Instructor Ever?

When I tell people this issue’s Dumbest Diver Ever? story, their usual reaction is one of shock. “No one could ever be that stupid,” they will say.

“Actually,” I’ll reply, “I came across someone even dumber.”

“Another diver?”

Instroketer Patch...

“No,” I’ll answer. “An instructor.”

Here is the story.

“Joe” came to work for us in early 1993, straight out of Very Famous Brand instructor school. So did most of our new employees. And, in general, we had very good luck with them (but I might be prejudiced here, having once been a staff instructor at Very Famous Brand instructor school).

The Job Placement Guy at Very Famous Brand instructor school went to great lengths extolling “Joe’s” virtues as a people person. “Outgoing.” “Upbeat.” “A hard worker.” These were all terms used to explain why we were going to be so lucky to have a person like “Joe” on our staff. What Job Placement Guy didn’t say — what may not have been apparent during “Joe’s” stay at Very Famous Brand instructor school — was that, when it came to common sense, “Joe” was several bushels short of a load.
